This race, the 27th running of the Daytona 500, marked a major changing of the guard in the sport's biggest race.As the Fords of Cale Yarborough and Bill Elliott continue to dominate, the time for the first scheduled pit stops rapidly approached. Bobby Allison, who started 34th, moved up to sixth by the time pit stops began. The first cars to come in for regular pit stops were the Fords of Kyle Petty and Ricky Rudd. The Fords were known not to get the mileage that the GM cars got, which seemed to be the one major flaw in the Fords' attempt to dominate the race. The biggest mistake in this round of pit stops belonged to Buddy Baker, who overshot his pit, which eventually ended up getting him lapped by lap 60, but didn't really have a negative impact on his day for reasons seen later. When Yarborough and Elliott stopped, the lead passed to Richard PEtty, then to Greg Sacks, and then to Terry Labonte, who went four laps longer than Elliott did and five laps longer than Yarborough did.All credits go to SPEED, ESPN Classic, NASCAR, and CBS Sports, who originally broadcast this race on February 17, 1985.
