The purpose of uploading this video is for the viewing pleasure for those that watch it.This is part seven of the 1984 Daytona 500. This race, run on February 19, 1984, is one of the truly forgotten jewels in the history of NASCAR. In fact, I consider this race, the 26th running of the Daytona 500, to be the greatest of all the Daytona 500s. It might not have had the most memorable moments, but from a pure competition standpoint, as far as the greatest drivers and teams in the history of the sport, and the all-day competition between the finest in the sport's history at their peaks, this ranks to me as the greatest Daytona 500 in history. This seventh part of the race is very significant, as a number of drivers run into problems, one of which causes the race's second caution period. While Richard Petty continues to lead comfortably, at least by Daytona 500 standards, others run into problems. Dick Trickle, who ran in the group with Tim Richmond, Cale Yarborough, Terry Labonte, and Dick Brooks, suffered ignition problems, leaving the race on the 59th lap. But the major blow among the contenders during this part of the race occurred when Bobby Allison's camshaft broke. Moments later, Bobby Hillin, Jr. blows an engine entering turn one on the 62nd lap, bringing out the second caution period. And although we don't see it, Tim Richmond, who was also in the top five, also runs into trouble during this part of the race, and eventually falls out after completing 66 laps with engine problems of his own, later blaming defective equipment. As you'll see at the beginning of the next portion of the race, Dale Earnhardt's crew gets him out first, a common occurrence in this race, during the pit stops under the caution for Hillin's blown engine. Earnhardt's pit crew gave him the lead no fewer than four times during the race, though he only passes to take the lead one time, passing Terry Labonte on the 113th lap, holding the top spot for four laps. This race may have began the legend of Richard Childress' pit crew, later to be known as "The Flying Aces".Also, during the caution, we see, step-by-step, the events that led to the collapse of auto racing's greatest family dynasty, as Petty Enterprises came apart from 1981-'83, which was culminated by Richard Petty's controversial "win" at Charlotte in the fall of 1983, his leaving the family team (for two years, as it turned out), and joining the new team owned by Mike Curb, while Kyle ran one more season for Petty Enterprises before leaving himself to join, of all teams, the Wood Brothers. This resuted in Pety Enterprises running only a handful of races in 1985 before Richard Petty, Dale Inman, and many of the old guys at Petty Enterprises returned for 1986. Petty Enterprises would not win again until the next-to-last race in 1996, with Bobby Hamilton, Sr. at Phoenix, and would only win two more races after that in it's original incarnation.
