The song 'Sekou Semega' from the 1996 album 'Divas of Mali: Great Vocal Performances From A Fabled Land' by Fanta Damba. She was born into a renowned 'jali' family in the Malian village of Segou. A jali is a West African storyteller, praise singer, poet and musician also known as griot. The griot is a repository of oral tradition. In African languages, griots are referred to by a number of names: jeli in northern Mande areas, jali in southern Mande areas, guewel in Wolof, gawlo in Pulaar (Fula). Both of her parents were musicians and Fanta started singing as a child guided by the most respected griots in the region. By her late teens she had already gained attention and started recording in her early 20s thanks to airplay on Radio Mali. In the mid 1970's, Damba was the first solo jali musician to tour Euroupe accompanied by ngoni (a guitar-lute), kora and guitar.
